We found our friends unlikely to appreciate our hundreds of photographs if they couldn't see at least some of them on one page. So we happily rotate. Try 3×2
or 4×3 ![]()

Now flicker free, adjustable and clickable. github ![]()
Tip: hover to highlight photos from the same week.
# Curiosity
Watching it flip through my small selection I start to wonder, how often do I see the same picture three times?
How long would I have to wait to see one repeated four times? Five times? Jackpot with the same picture in all six spots?
How long would my wait be a month from now? Two months? Three months? At the end of the year? Inquiring minds want to know.
This is similar to the surprising frequency of matching birthdays in a room. wikipedia ![]()
I could avoid duplication all together by constructing the list of images not shown and draw randomly from this. I could modify this list to those not recently shown improving slightly the wait to see my best photos.
# Simulation
We simulated rotating through two weeks of photos exchanging the next spot in turn at random every second. Here we report when we encountered two or more matching images on the rotator display. github ![]()
| photos | dups | seconds |
|---|---|---|
| 0,12,10,0,4,5 | 2 | 3 |
| 6,1,2,1,1,6 | 3 | 34 |
| 10,10,10,1,11,10 | 4 | 1859 |
| 5,7,7,7,7,7 | 5 | 8512 |
| 0,0,0,0,0,0 | 6 | 884978 |
Results are variable. Try it a few times. run ![]()
We've revised the rotator to choose from only images not currently shown. There must be at least one to work and two for any randomness.
